Sleep Disorders Center

Patients being tested for sleep apnea and other sleep problems at Fayette County Hospital and Long Term Care’s new Sleep Disorders Center are enjoying all the comforts of a leading hotel. Sleep disorder testing will now be conducted at the Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites in Vandalia.

“The hotel room is more sleep-conducive and less intimidating than the hospital environment for patients,” said John Provinzano, Director of Ancillary Services at Fayette County Hospital and Long Term Care. “The atmosphere and the hotel surroundings may help the patient relax so the sleep test is more accurate. We will be using two sleep rooms, one being handicapped accessible, to begin this new adventure with Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites.”

The Holiday Inn Express Hotel & Suites will provide a safe and secure location with easy access for the patient. Just like other hotel guests, the patient being tested at the center may arrive at the hotel at 3 pm and use the hotel’s swimming pool, hot tub, weight room and more. The patient’s family may stay in a separate discounted hotel room and enjoy time before and after testing with loved ones.

The Sleep Disorders Center provides testing and treatment for various types of sleep disorders, such as sleep apnea, insomnia and narcolepsy. The center’s staff will help find the cause of sleep problems through evaluation and sophisticated testing.

“The procedure for getting a sleep study will be changing”, said Mary Martin, Lead Respiratory Therapist.   Dr. Barkoviak, with Pulmonary Consultants of St. Louis, is Board Certified in Pulmonology.  Dr. Barkoviak is a sleep specialist physician who will meet with patients before they actually have their sleep study. We are trying to get our new sleep disorders center accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. By following their guidelines we will get that done. Sleep disorders managed by sleep specialists include breathing disorders, insomnia, hypersomnia, circadian rhythm sleep disorder and more. The patient’s doctor will still order the sleep study but potential sleep study patients will need to call the Physician Specialty Clinics to make an appointment with  Dr. Barkoviak, as well as the sleep study.”

The center acquired all new state-of-the-art testing equipment as part of the relocation project. A three-step process to evaluate, diagnose and treat patients for various sleep disorders. Once the root of the problem is uncovered, the sleep techs work with the patient’s personal physician to develop the most appropriate treatment plan to overcome the sleep disorder.
